DESCRIPTION:The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon – In Person and Online – Maine\, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes\, entombing a man in the ice\, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer\, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death\, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier\, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion\, declaring the death to be an accident\, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.

DESCRIPTION:Bringing the kids? We’ve got you covered. While you attend your program\, children ages 4 and up can join Youth Librarian River in the picture book area for stories\, crafts\, and free play. Older kids ages 9 and up are welcome to explore the youth area independently — think computers\, board games\, a scavenger hunt\, and the Winnie Belle Maker Space — with Teen Librarian\, Shadia\, on hand if needed. Caregivers must remain in the building. \nKids’ Corner is a new pilot program. Tell us what you think in our program survey!

This current events discussion group will attempt to quiet the noise and step back to reflect on what the news means\, what is its context\, and what the ramifications are. We will look at\, reflect on\, and analyze daily events and try to discern trends and understand the national picture and the larger world basing the discussion on factual information in a non-judgmental framework. This discussion group is free and open to all. Registration is not required. \n
