SUMMARY:Stories from the Queer Archives
DESCRIPTION:Objects such as banners\, T-shirts\, and buttons in the Vermont Queer Archives at the Pride Center of Vermont reflect currents and changes in the lives of Vermont’s LGBTQ+ community. \nMeg Tamulonis\, volunteer curator of the Archives\, discusses how these objects mark various milestones\, from Pride events to legal rulings\, and considers why some parts of the queer community aren’t well-represented in the Archives. She’ll explain why there aren’t many artifacts from the era before the Stonewall Uprising in 1969\, and some of the ways we can continue to gather and learn about Vermont’s many queer histories. \nThis is a Vermont Humanities event hosted by Brownell Library and it is inspired by this year’s Vermont Read: Charity and Sylvia\, a graphic novel by Tillie Walden.  Program attendees can pick up a free copy of Charity and Sylvia at this event.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Book Clubs: Red Clover\, Golden Dome\, and Green Mountain Book Awards
DESCRIPTION:Calling all home school readers! Join us on the third Tuesday of each month\, October through March\, from 1:30 to 2:30pm\, as we dig into this year’s Red Clover\, Golden Dome\, and Green Mountain Book Award nominees. Registration is required and available at: \nRed Clover Registration for students grades K-4 – Hosted by Sonny – Each month we’ll read two books from the list and bring them to life with a hands-on activity. Then\, in March\, you’ll cast your vote for your very favorite. Come discover new stories\, meet fellow book lovers\, and cast your vote for this year’s Red Clover winner! \nGolden Dome Registration for students grades 5-8 – Hosted by River – Each month we’ll discuss one book as a group\, then open the floor for you to share any other Golden Dome titles you’ve been reading on your own. Come ready to swap opinions\, defend your favorites\, and discover your next great read. To vote for your favorite in March\, you’ll need to read at least five titles from this year’s Golden Dome list—so there’s plenty to keep you turning pages between meetings. Most of all\, this is a chance to sharpen our discussion skills and enjoy the fun of talking books with fellow readers! \nGMBA Registration for students grades 9-12 – Hosted by Shadia – Each month we’ll discuss a title chosen by the group—what we loved\, what we didn’t\, the themes we noticed\, and how each book reflects and comments on the world around us. Come ready for lively conversation and strong opinions. Voting takes place at our final meeting in March\, so read up and be ready to make the case for your favorite. Most of all\, this is a chance to think deeply\, share your thoughts\, and enjoy great books in good company.

SUMMARY:Must Read Mondays - Patriot : a memoir\, by Alexei Navalny
DESCRIPTION:Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth\, his call to activism\, his marriage and family\, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him\, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. \nIn vivid\, page-turning detail\, including never-before-seen correspondence from prison\, Navalny recounts\, among other things\, his political career\, the many attempts on his life\, and the lives of the people closest to him\, and the relentless campaign he and his team waged against an increasingly dictatorial regime. \nWritten with the passion\, wit\, candor\, and bravery for which he was justly acclaimed\, Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life. \nPlease fill out this form to get the GoToMeeting sign in information.\nhttps://forms.gle/UE9ZDT8ZD3a7UAQs8

SUMMARY:Must Read Mondays - Berry Pickers\, by Amanda Peters
DESCRIPTION:July 1962. Following in the tradition of Indigenous workers from Nova Scotia\, a Mi’kmaq family arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer. Weeks later\, four-year-old Ruthie\, the family’s youngest child\, vanishes. She is last seen by her six-year-old brother\, Joe\, sitting on a favorite rock at the edge of a berry field. Joe will remain distraught by his sister’s disappearance for years to come. \nIn Maine\, a young girl named Norma grows up as the only child of an affluent family. Her father is emotionally distant\, her mother frustratingly overprotective. Norma is often troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination. As she grows older\, Norma slowly comes to realize there is something her parents aren’t telling her. Unwilling to abandon her intuition\, she will spend decades trying to uncover this family secret.\n\nPlease fill out this form to get the GoToMeeting sign in information.\nhttps://forms.gle/UE9ZDT8ZD3a7UAQs8

SUMMARY:Must Read Mondays - Audition by Katie Kitamura
DESCRIPTION:One woman\, the performance of a lifetime. Or two. An exhilarating\, destabilizing Möbius strip of a novel that asks whether we ever really know the people we love.\n\nTwo people meet for lunch in a Manhattan restaurant. She’s an accomplished actress in rehearsals for an upcoming premiere. He’s attractive\, troubling\, young—young enough to be her son. Who is he to her\, and who is she to him? In this compulsively readable\, brilliantly constructed novel\, two competing narratives unspool\, rewriting our understanding of the roles we play every day – partner\, parent\, creator\, muse – and the truths every performance masks\, especially from those who think they know us most intimately.\n\nPlease fill out this form to get the GoToMeeting sign in information.\nhttps://forms.gle/UE9ZDT8ZD3a7UAQs8

SUMMARY:Must Read Monday - The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
DESCRIPTION:The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon – In Person and Online – Maine\, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes\, entombing a man in the ice\, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer\, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death\, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier\, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion\, declaring the death to be an accident\, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.
