SUMMARY:100th Anniversary: Ghost Stories
DESCRIPTION:Gather ’round for a night of ghost stories in honor of Brownell’s 100th anniversary! Start at the popcorn bar\, then settle in by the fire to share a spooky tale. We’ll have shadow puppets\, flashlights\, Halloween sound effects\, and a collection of local ghost stories for anyone who needs a little inspiration—including a few haunts from Essex Junction’s own past. This program is open to all ages\, so come ready to give your story a rating: one screaming ghost is kid-friendly\, five screaming ghosts are not for the faint of heart. The evening gets spookier the later it goes\, so choose your bedtime wisely!

SUMMARY:Flaxtravaganza @ Ethan Allen Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Meet us at the Ethan Allen Homestead for Flaxtravaganza\, a fall harvest reenactment\, with a special focus on flax fiber processing. This is a FREE admission day at the Homestead and there will be hot apple cider heated over the open fire\, cookies\, tours of the historic Allen House\, exhibits\, and a chance to get dressed up in the costumer corner for an historic family photo shoot amongst the beautiful fall foliage. While you are there\, stop by our table for a fall craft and stories\, and pick up a free copy of this year’s Vermont Read: Charity and Sylvia by Tillie Walden. \n \nThis collaboration is inspired by this year’s Vermont Reads selection\, Charity and Sylvia by Tillie Walden. In 1807\, Weybridge\, Vermont is small\, cold\, lonely\, and beautiful. As an unwed woman with few prospects\, Sylvia Drake resides with and cares for her sister’s rambunctious family. But today the house is abuzz awaiting a guest—Charity Bryant. This graphic novel\, created by Walden from archival materials at the Henry Sheldon Museum and other primary and secondary sources\, explores the 44 years that Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake lived together as life partners. As their relationship and place in their community grow\, America grows alongside them. We see the arrival of the railroad\, the terms of 14 presidents\, riots\, rebellion\, and plagues. Check out a copy of the book or pick up a free copy to take home by attending one of our Vermont Reads events this year.\n \nVermont Reads is a Vermont Humanities program\, join the statewide conversation by reading the book or attending a related program at local libraries this year.
