Library Trustee Job Description

Job description for open position on the Board of Trustees
The Brownell Library is a Department of the City of Essex Junction and adheres to the City’s
municipal code of ethics, City and Library policies, and all state and federal laws pertaining to
Vermont public libraries. Per VT State Statutes and the MOU between the Essex Junction City
Council and Brownell Library Board of Trustees (March 12, 2025), the Library is supported
financially by the City and provides services free of charge.
The Brownell Library Board of Trustees is committed to building a Board that represents a
variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills.
It is expected that elected library Trustees:
● Demonstrate that you support the Library’s mission and goals
● Be a resident of the City of Essex Junction
● Fulfill the requirements to have your name placed on the ballot: refer to the City of Essex
Junction City offices for current requirements
● Win the majority of votes
Permanent Trustee vacancies must:
● Demonstrate that you support the Library’s mission and goals
● Be selected by consensus by the current permanent Trustees
Library Mission, Values, and Goals
Brownell Library Trustees provide leadership, policy-setting, and planning for the Library. Five
elected and five permanent board members serve as one body. The Board of Trustees is
committed to the Library’s mission, which is to cultivate a thriving, innovative environment where
every voice is valued, and our collective efforts prepare individuals to contribute meaningfully to
a changing world.

Elected and permanent Trustees are expected to perform the following, including but not limited
to:
● Attend and participate in monthly meetings
● Be actively involved in Library events and initiatives
● Support the active Brownell Library Strategic Plan
