Start your child’s reading journey with 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. This nonprofit foundation encourages caregivers to read 1000 books with their child before they enter kindergarten. Reading together this way builds early literacy skills, prepares children for school, and gives caregivers and children a warm routine to share.

A thousand books is a long way to travel, but participation is simple:

• Register at the youth desk and pick up your first reading log.
• Every time you and your child finish 100 books, stop by the youth desk and let us know. We’ll update our records and send you off with the next reading log, a sticker, and a paper train car to mark your progress.
• At 1000 books, the journey is complete. Your child will have a full train to display at home, a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten medal to wear proudly, and a thousand books behind them. We’ll also give you the option of adding your child’s photo to our 1000 Books Hall of Fame.
